The Lake
Transfixed beside the lake
I conjure up an alien world
by staring into sunless depths,
watching the carnal ecstasies.
A place of mystery lies beneath,
a miasmic, secretive domain
where lust impels and hunger drives
to unrelenting savagery.
This dark, unfathomable life
where tiny creatures fight and kill,
devour their prey and swim or slink
into their subterranean lair
acts like a magnet to my soul,
draws me below the dark surface,
to explore the primal innocence
where instinct drives the fatal blow.
So why have I a sense of peace,
and joy in face of strife?
What makes me stare obsessed
while mayhem seethes beneath my feet?
I rest, and lose myself in wonder,
mind relaxed. I am content
to leave these questions
floating before my eyes,
mysteries that I can never catch,
never hold in my hand, like dragonflies
that hover teasingly above the lilies,
painting devious tracks,
evasive patterns in the air.
