Don Quixote and the Wind Farms
Don Quixote had a fixed idea
To knock the windmills down
The cause, to him, was very clear,
the risk they posed was all too near,
they threatened all that he held dear,
that knight of great renown.
For windmills wave their arms about
and make a lot of noise,
while power stations simply spout
their gentle acid rain from out
their chimneys elegant and stout
- or soft, life-giving rays.
And windmills look so ugly there
upon their breezy height,
they stand like giants in their lair
and fix you with their haughty glare,
and look as if your damsel fair
is somehow in their sight
Don took his shining sword in hand
and waved it round his head.
He gazed toward the gloomy band
of monsters, and his great arm panned
across the arid, tawny land -
- his servant watched in dread.
For Sancho Panza knew the Knight
had very odd ideas.
Hed often seen him pick a fight
with strangers innocent and bright,
and on new friendships cast a blight
that upset all his peers.
So Sancho stood in front of Don,
and to him made this speech:
- My Lord, I know you hate those yon
great windmills that we see upon
yon hill, but hear my words -
Theyre better than the giants that leach
huge quantities of putrid bleach
on every soft and pleasant beach
from here to Kingdom Come.
Please let the windmills do their work,
help to prevent the Acid Murk
and all the other ills that lurk
in chimneys tall and glum.
If you dont hear me, Ill resign
and leave you in your sad decline
wake up! and see the harm malign
that power stations cause.
Dont let them capture in their claws
our beasts, our plants, our birds
fight off the wretched stuff that gnaws
and wafts around without a pause
fight to amend our ancient laws
- pray listen to my words!
