Maelstrom Guidelines
.. It is up to you to decide which of the various forums that you post in; we have a selection to choose from depending on the type of poetry you write. Occasionally the admins may move a post to another forum where we consider it to be more appropriate, but we don't delete anything unless it is deliberately offensive. Please note that announcements, topics of general interest, etc. should be posted either in The Source or The Babbling Brook forums, not in the poetry posting forums which are for the posting of ... poetry!! (If you can't find your announcement, check one of these forums ... it's been moved!) If you would like to post work of an erotic nature, we have a password protected forum (The Vortex) which is to be used for this. Please email us for a password if you are over 18. If you wish to post other work that deals with more "adult" issues or themes in any of the main forums, please ensure you add a warning note to the subject line.
.. Critique & Guidance - The Maelstrom has two forums specificially to critique and revision of poems, called The Rapids and White Water, that can be used by all members to offer or seek guidance on their work. There are specific guidelines for how critique is to be offered at the top of the forum pages, but in general terms, The Rapids is to be used for light critique and polishing; White Water is for more in-depth critique. With regard to the other forums, we encourage comment on the overall poem in terms of content/form and our responses to it. We also allow light-handed corrections to spelling, grammar, word usage, and form. However, we would prefer to keep more in depth critique and poem revisions to the Rapids & White Water forums.
.. Please limit the number of new posts you make to no more than two per forum per day and please don't post the same piece in multiple forums. This gives everyone the chance to read and comment on your work; remember - not everyone can access the site for long periods each day, and it takes time for everyone to read everything! Also, we expect you to reply to at least as many pieces as you post (in that particular forum on that day!) This is only good manners!! This restriction only applies to the Poetry, Prose and Stories section of the site; you are welcome to post as much and as often as you like in the Conversation and Information areas. There is also no limit to the number of replies you can make to other posts!
.. Please read and comment on the works of your fellow authors. If you don't comment on their work, they are unlikely to comment on your work! You give what you get...the more you give, the more you will get and this is a community...commenting on the work also encourages people to write and post more often, which all helps to keep this community alive and vibrant. If you want to receive replies to your own work .. don't forget to give.
.. Guest Archives - these are set up automatically either if a writer has made more than 1000 posts at The Maelstrom, or has been appointed as a moderator, past or present.
.. The Maelstrom was designed to be a place where people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities can enjoy poetry and stories in all forms. Please respect the spirit of The Maelstrom, and avoid personal or potentially offensive posts...We don't believe any of our current contributors would do this, but if you are new, please respect our wishes. We have not had to ban anyone yet, and we would prefer not to have to! We respect all religions, beliefs, colours, genders, and orientations...and we will not support intolerance or prejudice in any form.
.. We are more than happy for you to leave a link to your site at The Maelstrom, but please leave it in the Watersmeet forum. We encourage links from other poetry and writing related sites, but we reserve the right to delete spam links and non-writing related links if we do not feel they reflect the nature of The Maelstrom.
.. The Maelstrom is a constantly evolving site, and we will make changes from time to time to try and improve the service we offer to our members. If you have any suggestions, please let us know...
